Safmarine to the rescue

Ray Smuts AN UNUSUAL humanitarian mission was played out off the Spanish coast recently when a Safmarine vessel rescued two seamen who had come unstuck after the successful rescue of several others. The Safmarine Cotonou and another ship, the Castor, responded to distress messages from a fishing vessel, the Henry, thought to be Spanish. The Master of Safmarine Cotonou, Captain G C Hatcher, reported that as Castor had a rescue boat available she would ascertain what assistance could be rendered to the crew of the disabled Henry which was fast taking on water. The craft was successfully launched and the HenryÕs four-man crew transferred safely to the Castor. But then things went awry. As the craft was being recovered it capsized, flinging two of the CastorÕs crew into the water. The Safmarine Cotonou then launched a lifeboat, recovered the men and proceeded on its voyage to Algeciras in Spain where they were landed while the Castor delivered the Henry's crew to Cadiz.
