SA port handles record volumes

October marked a milestone achievement for the Ngqura Container Terminal (NCT) when it handled 81 927 twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) – the highest volume ever.

19% of the total was imports, 18% exports and 63% transhipments. Transhipments are a key focus for the port which Transnet Port Terminals general manager Eastern Cape terminals, Siya Mhlaluka, believes is ideally positioned to service the east and west markets.

The reality of the increased volumes is, however, a reflection of Durban’s current poor performance with congestion forcing vessels to dock at alternative ports, among them Ngqura.
