First of a series of crackdowns
A CROSS-BORDER
operation involving South
African and Mozambique
police has netted more
than 32 stolen vehicles
in the first of a series
of crackdowns which
the authorities of both
countries have agreed to
undertake.
Operation Maluti
spokesman Pedro Cossa
of the Mozambique
police says that the bulk
of the vehicles had been
stolen in SA. Engines
have been tampered with
and false registration
plates attached.
“We have been aware
that two provinces
immediately to the north
of Maputo have been
harbouring vehicles with
suspicious registrations,”
he says. ”This is not the
first time and it won’t
be the last that police
will conduct this type of
operation.”
A number of vehicles
have also been brought
into the country from
South Africa where
the correct procedures
had not been followed.
Companies on both sides
of the border are now
being questioned, he
says.
Most vehicles stolen
from South Africa enter
Mozambique through
illegal crossing points on
the vast border between
the two countries.
