SA could become gas exporter

South Africa could easily
become an exporter of gas
should the government
succeed in its efforts to
break its reliance on coal
and develop a sustainable
gas solution for the
country, according to
Tina Joemat-Pettersson,
minister of energy.
Speaking at the Gas
Options meeting in
Cape Town last week
she said advances in
drilling technology had
fundamentally changed
the economics and role of
unconventional gas across
the world.
Citing the US as an
example, she said the largescale
exploitation of that
opportunity in the US had
played a significant role in
its economic recovery from
the great recession of 2009.
