SA and Ghana sign port agreement

SOUTHERN AFRICAN port co-operation took a step forward last week when the National Ports Authority of South Africa (NPA) and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) signed an agreement designed to foster co-operation in the fields of port management, port operations and port administration. ‘The agreement will boost regional trade and coastal shipping as the parties have also pledged to facilitate interaction between the major exporters in South Africa and Ghana,” said NPA CEO Siyabonga Gama. Ben Owusu-Mensah, director-general of the GPHA, said the agreement stipulates that the authorities will support each other in strengthening port safety and security services and providing technical knowledge in the fields of port management and information systems technology. They will also facilitate the training of staff at maritime or other institutions of higher learning in both countries.
