The road freight industry at present faces some of the biggest challenges since the eighties - and finding solutions is imperative for the sustainability of the industry.
From ludicrous charges to new fines, permits and regulations, the trucking industry was struggling to dodge the blows it was now consistently facing, said Sharmini Naidoo, CEO of the Road Freight Association.
Opening the annual RFA conference in Champagne Sports Resort in the Drakensberg today, Naidoo said despite this trucking in South Africa had consistently proven its tenacity.
“We are under pressure to cut to the core and deliver efficiency and efficacy. We are rolling with the punches.”
Naidoo said the conference was aimed at discussing the very issues road freight operators were facing in an effort to find solutions paving the way forward.
Delivering the keynote address, Chris Hlabisa, deputy director general: road transport with the department of transport (DoT), gave assurance that government would engage with the freight industry as they were recognised as an important stakeholder in the transport sector.
