Securing some 900 tons of drill and riser pipe on a barge recently was all in a day’s work for specialist cargo handling company Cape Crating. Called in at the last minute to secure the cargo on a barge to be towed to Mozambique, it required quick thinking and fast hands, said director Owen Bottomley. “It all happened at very short notice in Port Elizabeth,” he told FTW. “Our scope of work was to assist in the positioning of lashing points as well as the supply and fixing of dunnage and the lashing and securing of the cargo.” Bottomley said using soft lashings and the company’s new pneumatic fastener the cargo was secured and moved to its final destination in Mozambique with no incident. “We are very happy to report that it arrived safely. All of this proves again the importance of specialist expertise in the industry.” CAPTION Lashing and securing the cargo for oncarriage to Mozambique.
