Dangerous goods logistics requires a rare combination of precision, expertise and investment – attributes that Leschaco has embedded in its DNA worldwide. According to Simon Chalker, commercial manager of Leschaco South Africa, the handling of dangerous goods is not a side offering but one of the company’s core global competencies. At the heart of Leschaco’s service portfolio is its weekly consolidation from Germany to South Africa, which also draws cargo from other European countries. This service has become a vital lifeline for exporters moving chemical products and other regulated cargo into South Africa and neighbouring markets. “Many consolidators will not carry dangerous goods, leaving exporters with limited options,” explained Chalker. “Our expertise provides a safe, compliant and cost-effective way to move smaller volumes as LCL shipments, without warranting a full container load.” Volumes on the service have remained stable and consistent, underlining its dependability. Cargo moved includes chemicals and commodities critical to industries such as manufacturing and automotive – sectors that underpin economic growth across southern Africa. Chalker emphasised that Leschaco’s commitment to dangerous goods was as much cultural as it was operational. “Globally, all our staff are trained specialists in the safe handling, storage and transport of dangerous goods. The training is rigorous, covering both theoretical and practical aspects, and ensures compliance with constantly evolving regulations,” he told Freight News. This commitment is matched by continued investment in infrastructure. Most recently, Leschaco opened a state-of-the- art facility in Bremen, Germany, specifically designed to handle, store and pack dangerous goods. “Our consolidation service is complemented by our global tanktainer division, which provides customers with additional transport options, particularly in the chemical industry.” Looking ahead, Chalker said the company’s focus remained on building strong client relationships. “This year we celebrate 40 years in South Africa, and our outlook remains strong. The chemical industry provides vital inputs across so many sectors. As long as manufacturing continues to grow in the region, the demand for safe and specialised dangerous goods logistics will grow alongside it. Leschaco is committed to remaining at the forefront of that growth.” LV
