Remote tracking preserves fruit quality

Shippers in the
perishable sector
are increasingly
exploring new
technology to track product
in an effort to preserve
quality.
“There are far more
opportunities now to
monitor product remotely
and South African
shippers are definitely
starting to explore the
new technologies that are
becoming available for
easier real-time tracking
and monitoring of their
perishable goods,” an
export source told FTW.
“There are some very good
opportunities to be realised
and it will undoubtedly add
value to our supply chain.
One must not forget that
South Africa is a long-haul
destination and one
is moving perishables for
long periods of time in
relatively harsh
environments.
Having
better tools
to monitor
and track will
be extremely
beneficial.”
Through
the remote
tracking
of cargo,
quality
control
can be
maintained far better than
ever before. Exporters
can also use business
intelligence solutions
available to the market
now to track every single
pallet of fruit or vegetables
from the farm to the
supermarket. At the same
time it is essential that it
be known exactly
how much was
received per
pallet, in what
currency and at
what exchange
rate.
Technologies
also monitor
internal
conditions
of reefer
containers
such as
temperature,
humidity, shock and light.
“All of this leads to
better control over product
while more visibility
improves security,” he said.
