Land-locked SADC countries looking for alternatives to South Africa, given the criminal and xenophobic attacks on foreign truck drivers, have plenty of choice. There are 14 ports serving the 11 SADC countries on the African continent, according to a regional map published by the SADC. They start with the small transit river port of Matadi in the Democratic Republic of Congo (draft of 8.2m), and end with Dar es Salaam on almost the same latitude on the east coast but with a draft of 11 metres. The main ports serving the inland countries are Walvis Bay, Maputo, Beira and Dar es Salaam, all of which have undergone recent upgrades. Exporters and importers also have a choice regarding 32 border posts in the region.
