'Reduce logistics demand'

Moving agricultural products
more efficiently will become
an increasingly bigger
challenge for southern Africa
in light of ever-increasing
logistics costs.
The 2015 Logistics
Barometer by the University
of Stellenbosch found that
logistics costs made up just
over half of the landed cost
of agriculture, mining and
manufactured goods.
Traditionally, says
Professor Jan Havenga of the
University of Stellenbosch
department of logistics, much
focus has been placed on how
logistics can be made more
efficient when South Africa
should rather be looking at
reducing the demand for
logistics – in other words
reducing the kilometres
travelled by each tonne, how
long it is stored and how
often it is handled.
