‘Red tape stifles economic growth’ – Winde

“Red tape is one of the biggest challenges facing business in South Africa and we have to create an environment where it is easy to trade if we want to truly grow our economy.” That’s according to Western Cape MEC for finance, economic development and tourism, Alan Winde, who says if we don’t do it we are going to lose out to the big players in the world like China and Singapore and to small markets like Rwanda. He said in Rwanda it took only two days to register a business. This is because the country realises they need less bureaucracy if they really want to grow their number of small and medium enterprises. “In Singapore it goes even faster. It only takes two hours to register a new company,” said Winde. “In South Africa at present it takes a minimum of 26 days to register the very same company.
