South Africa Cargo Services
has re-engineered its service
offering to provide tailored
solutions that add value in an
increasingly commoditised
market.
With commodity
prices under pressure and
operating costs on an upward
trajectory, the company has
scaled back its bulk cargo
operations and re-emerged as
a stronger and more relevant
entity, according to business
development manager Hans
Modipane.
“In Durban, for example,
we have upgraded our
warehouse operation to a
clean operation where we are
able to offer handling and
cross docking services for
palletised cargo, bulk bagged
cargo, bales and rubber
to name a few,” Modipane
told FTW. “In addition we
are continuing to create
partnerships where we are
able to offer all-in solutions
providing
additional
services such
as empty
container
pick up and
full container
delivery,” he
said.
The
company
had seen
significant
growth in
static cargo
and project cargo handling
on ro-ro ships, particularly in
the port of Durban, he added.
And while SA Cargo is
constantly reviewing its
operations, it remains open
for business in all South
African ports where it has
always had a footprint. “We
continue to offer a diverse
range of cargo
handling
services,
including bulk
handling, and
are working
tirelessly to
increase our
participation
in the
handling of
bulk flows
– mostly
manganese
ore moving
through the port of Port
Elizabeth – and other diverse
bulk commodities moving
through the port of Cape
Town,” said Modipane. “We
are geared and experienced
to handle this type of cargo
in these ports.”
The company is confident
that its strategic approach
has created the launch pad
for future growth.
“Difficult decisions had to
be taken to rationalise some
of the loss-making divisions
– and with continued focus
on driving operational
efficiencies, the company is
already showing a slow but
positive turn around,” he
said.
“The rebranding from
Greystones Cargo Systems
to South Africa Cargo
Services – SA Cargo in short
– in June this year reflects
the new vision and focus to
provide relevant solutions
that facilitate business and
add value to our clients as a
strategic business partner.”
