IT IS said that records are created to be broken, and Richards Bay's multi purpose terminal has certainly been busy proving that adage of late.
The latest record came in mid-December when an NYK bulker, Angel Wing, loaded 41 365 metric tonnes of ferro alloy destined for five Japanese and Korean ports. What's more, this was achieved in a mere eight and a half days, a daily intake of nearly 5 000 mt. This load rate would in fact have been higher except that seasonal pressures on Spoornet brought about delays to delivery of cargo to the harbour.
It was a mere three months ago that another bulk ship, Cape Agulhas, which is on charter to NYK from SA Marine Corporation, set the previous record when she loaded 39 900 mt of ferro alloys.
