The Port of Richards Bay opened 30 years ago to handle a mere 2.6 million tonnes of coal a year (considered a lot then), but had soon expanded beyond anyone’s wildest expectation. By 2005 the port was handling 89mt and is now set for even more dramatic growth, despite mounting concerns over productivity and other issues that port users hope will soon be addressed.
