An eight-kilometre section of the R568 linking the N4 and D670 in Bronkhorstspruit has been rehabilitated and upgraded.
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela officially opened the upgraded section last week.
The provincial government described the R568 as a major rural arterial route used mainly by light vehicles and medium-sized trucks. It provides access between surrounding communities, agricultural operations, businesses and the N4 corridor.
The project included the rehabilitation and upgrading of more than eight kilometres of road, the construction of surfaced shoulders and work on key intersections.
Drainage infrastructure was also rehabilitated, while culverts, concrete side drains and stormwater channels were installed. Road signs and markings formed part of the project.
Diale-Tlabela said the work was expected to strengthen connections between local producers, markets and regional supply chains.
“The R568 connects farmers to markets, businesses to supply chains and communities to opportunities,” she said.
She added that the upgraded corridor would support the movement of goods and create better conditions for economic activity in Bronkhorstspruit and surrounding areas.
According to the provincial government, the project is expected to provide safer travelling conditions for freight operators, public transport services, commuters and other road users.
