A R213m project to revamp the Johannesburg International Airport interchange gateway will have a major impact on airfreight, Transport Minister Jeff Radebe said at the launch last week. In line with the 2010 Fifa World Cup preparations, the project is expected to reduce pressure on roads leading to and from JIA and improve access. The DOT is currently finalising a strategy that combines infrastructure, operations and regulatory interventions to increase the efficiency and capacity for freight movement in the country. Radebe said that air cargo was one of his priorities and that by July the government’s views on the role of air cargo within the broader development strategy would be revealed.
