Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics Abnormal Load Services (WWL ALS) Johannesburg might still be in its infancy but it has hit the road running – proving that the project sector is booming. With existing project business in the renewables market in the Eastern Cape, and in the energy sector in central Gauteng, the company is upbeat, says WWL ALS general manager for South Africa, Simon Kew. “Inquiries and opportunities continue to stream in. The project and breakbulk sectors now constitute approximately 50% of the company’s business, while the other 50% is within the mobile construction equipment logistics sector.” Kew said this had increased from previous years where the ratio for projects was as little as 30:70. “In particular over the past year we have seen larger scale project enquiries becoming more prevalent in the market place. These were previously continually postponed or delayed due to recessive economies and a general noncommittal attitude amongst clients, protecting existing business as opposed to looking to expansion,” said Kew. “These larger-scale project enquiries are increasing, presumably as more companies invest in an attempt to grow into different markets and sectors.”
