The poultry industry has until
October 20 to comment on a
proposal to implement a levy of
R500 per container (excluding
VAT) on imported chicken –
including deboned cuts‚ frozen
carcasses and offal.
This was proposed by the
Association of Meat Importers
and Exporters (Amie) and
announced in a statement
by the National Agricultural
Marketing Council (NAMC).
According to the NAMC,
the estimated income from
the proposed levy would be
approximately R7million for
the 2018-19 financial year.
It is intended to finance
development and retention of
markets‚ including the export
promotion of South African
chicken, transformation in the
industry, and research and
development.
“The comments will
enable the NAMC to finalise
its recommendation to the
Minister of Agriculture‚
Forestry and Fisheries,” said a
spokesperson for the marketing
council.
