WHAT HAS been billed as the first Maritime Africa 2000 Conference took place over 4 days in Durban last week. FTW's Durban
correspondent, Terry Hutson, reports that most of the papers were of a high quality and covered an
interesting selection of subjects with an international panel of speakers. What was lacking however, and which was noted and commented on by many of the delegates,
was a lack of senior Portnet and shipping line leaders either
attending or presenting papers, or even simply being available to respond to questions and comment as can be seen from the reports on this page.
FTW understands that this was not the fault of the organisers - in fact some of the early conference
literature indicated that industry representation would be
comprehensive. Their absence however meant that a key factor
was missing.
The Port of Durban has limited development options, according to Derek Lawrance who came out strongly in favour of Richards Bay
