WITH A July 15 completion date marked down from the start of the project, the Durban harbour car terminal is now into the final stages.
The R28-million terminal is on an 8,5 hectare site at Cato Creek (at the Point Road end of the harbour), with a planned, annual transit capacity of 140 000 vehicle units.
With the administration offices now finished, and overlooking the site, all the services have been installed, according to Portnet's planning and development department in the Port City. Stormwater drainage, electrical supplies and all ducting are in place, FTW was told.
The surfacing is half
finished, with Area A
complete, and earthworks well under way for the remainder, said the department's spokesperson.
The lighting system is complete, and the fencing has just gone out for tender.
Portnet and the various
user-partners in the terminal scheme - including the importers/exporters of motor vehicles, sea carriers, road transporters and forwarders - are currently in the throes of developing the information technology system for the new car terminal.
