ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES has doubled the number of frequencies between its home base and South Africa, allowing an additional five tons of cargo capacity weekly from Johannesburg International Airport.
It's on an indefinite basis, and no time structure has been given on when the additional service may or may not be curtailed, says Bryn Woolley, director of Airline Cargo Resources, who act as g.s.a. for the airline in this country.
But it is certainly helping considerably in taking loads into African destinations which is such a growing market, he says.
The additional flight has enabled Ethiopian to re-introduce its service to Durban, which was suspended two years ago because of low yields. At that stage the airline cut back from twice a week to a single weekly flight to this country.
The new service operates into Durban from Addis Ababa via Johannesburg on Tuesdays, returning via Johannesburg the following day. ACR is also the airline's g.s.a. for Durban loadings.
The airline has stated that it will operate on what it terms a seasonal basis until April, when it will decide whether to introduce it to the permanent schedule or not. The Sunday service between the two countries via Harare will continue. It has also announced the reintroduction of a weekly flight between Addis Abbaba and Luanda, Angola.
