Seven talented South African boxers have realised their wildest dreams to campaign in the second Olympics qualifier tournament in Cairo - thanks to a R500 000 sponsorship by Portnet.
If the boxers, all members of the South African National Amateur Boxing Organisation (Sanabo), do qualify they will join three team mates who already came through at the recent All Africa Games at the Olympic Games in Sydney.
Advocate Berrington Mkhize, Sanabo's general secretary, said the three-year Portnet sponsorship would help raise the standards of amateur boxing in South Africa and had certainly played a vital role in elevating the skills of the Cairo contingent.
The Portnet sponsorship involves participation of the national team at the authority's five annual harbor festivals and is linked to an extensive boxing development programme including awareness clinics geared to unearth new talent.
Portnet's general manager, marketing, Pumi Sithole, says boxing
provides an idea platform to create change in the country.
One of the motivations for Portnet becoming involved in boxing is that the sport offers individuals from disadvantaged communities the chance to develop their potential and use it to achieve their goals and objectives.
