Port privatisation delay

ALAN PEAT A workshop on the new National Ports Act regulations scheduled for yesterday (July 27) has been cancelled – and disappointed those in the SA shipping industry who were keenly awaiting further details on the port privatisation plans. The regulations, amongst other things, deal with the issue of public/private partnerships in port operation, according to Tony Norton of Garlicke & Bousfield – legal adviser to the Association of Shipping Lines (ASL) and the Association of Ships Agents and Brokers of SA (Asabosa). “We have been waiting with bated breath for the presentation of these regulations,” he said. “But the promised exposure has been delayed.” It is believed that a document detailing the regulations is to soon be made public, but the department of transport was not prepared to make any comment on the issue.
