Port of Mombasa raises red flag about import/export imbalance

Port of Mombasa.

The Port of Mombasa handled about 17 million tonnes of cargo imports for the first nine months of this year (up to September 30)  while export volumes only totalled 2.7 million tonnes during the period.

This was announced by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) last week, highlighting it as a point of concern as it is negatively affecting the economies of the East African Community (EAC). “As a region, we import more than we export and that is not good for our economies. We are concerned about this and call on the regional countries to do more to raise their exports,” said KPA managing director Gichiri Ndua, speaking during the opening of a media workshop held in Mombasa last week.
