POLOKWANE INTERNATIONAL Airport in Limpopo has its sights firmly set on a previously unexplored niche - the cargo industry.
The airport is planning a
R100-million upgrade, and according to GM for marketing and planning, Patricia Tharage, this will include a cargo warehouse, cold storage and cargo handling facilities. The runway is to be extended by 1.5km.
“We have never been involved in cargo before and hope to attract agricultural exporters in the region who currently move their goods through Johannesburg.
“A number of airlines have expressed interest in using the airport and we expect the basic cargo facilities to be in place by June next year,” she told ftw.
