Pilots’ strike declared unlawful

The pilots’ strike at Lufthansa last week (See FTWO Sep 8) was declared unlawful by a Frankfurt court because the union “had overstepped its mandate”.

The judge, in his findings, said that the union’s reason for the latest strike was to fight low-cost expansion. But, he added, the formal reason originally given at the start of the strike 18 months ago was early retirement benefits. So he ruled that the two-day strike was not justified.

So now, a rather chastened pilots’ union, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) has proposed fresh talks this week with Lufthansa management over those early retirement benefits.

A Lufthansa spokesman was quoted by Airwise News as saying: “We’ll have a look to see if one of the proposed dates will work for us.”
