Petroleum products remain the top performing export product in the Western Cape according to Wesgro CEO, Tim Harris. Addressing the Exporters’ Club Western Cape recently, Harris said while the Western Cape was renowned for its agricultural exports, responsible for 50% of South Africa’s total agricultural exports, petrol was by far the biggest export product. “When you have a refinery like we do, the price of petrol, the price of oil, those products tend to dominate one’s export basket. It remains a superimportant earner of foreign exchange in the Cape.” Harris said looking at the top 100 exporters in the Western Cape some 66% were in the agriculture, food and beverage sector, 7% in oil and gas, and 3% in iron and steel. “Many people, however, don’t realise that the fifth biggest exporter out of the Western Cape is a beauty and wellness company,” he said, indicating the variety of the province's export basket.
