Putting freight back on the tracks FREIGHT IS making a return to rail in Port Elizabeth through an innovative approach by Miziwe Rail Couriers, which has acquired guaranteed space in the guard’s vans of passenger trains travelling between Port Elizabeth and Gauteng. Trains leave Port Elizabeth for Gauteng at three in the afternoon, and arrive in Johannesburg at 11 the next morning. The return trip leaves Johannesburg at 13:30 and arrives in Port Elizabeth by 12 the next day. Miziwe can carry up to 100 cubic metres of freight at a time, with the only restriction being the weight of the packages. Because the van is loaded on a passenger platform, it is not possible to use fork lifts or other heavy lifting equipment.
