KEVIN MAYHEW THE LACK of parking facilities for trucks hauling hazardous chemicals is one of the glaring omissions at the Beit Bridge border post. Without being alarmist, the owner of Afrique Exporte Internationale, Tickey Nel, says that inaction on the part of the authorities has left them with a disaster waiting to happen. “We have agitated and tried to get things done, but it falls on deaf ears. We have already had one incident which meant the evacuation of the entire working area at the border post for days, but the urgency has worn off,” he said. Afrique is one of the largest independent companies and has been operating since 1981, providing general cargo clearing and forwarding. Nel believes that the advent of the SADC bloc provided one of the biggest boosts to trade allowing member countries to inter-source products and goods within the community.
