Panama Canal expansion pushed out again

Major delays and added expenses have resulted in an extended deadline for the long-awaited Panama Canal expansion.

Launched in 2007, the expansion project, which has been marred by legal disputes, aims to triple the canal’s capacity, reports shipping news site, World Maritime News.

Panama’s president, Juan Carlos Varela, has reportedly urged the Spanish-led consortium which is in charge of the project, Grupo Unidos por el Canal de Panama (GUPC), to focus on completing the Panama Canal expansion works, and to leave the legal disputes to “competent authorities”.
