There has been an encouraging upturn in the market for road freight this year, according to Germane Maren, director of road transport specialists, STS Logistics. The company’s primary route is the country’s main road transport artery between the Port of Durban and Johannesburg and surrounds. It hauls full containers up to the Reef markets, and returns loaded with empties bound for export customers in Durban. STS Logistics uses a fleet of superlink triaxle trailers and single-axle horses to haul containers, palletised cargo and the likes of steel and granite in the breakbulk mode. Maren pointed out that the company also moved less-than-container loads (LCLs) of about two to three tonnes per parcel, and looks for prime utilisation of its 12-metre trailers by often carrying one 6-m box with the remaining space taken up with breakbulk loads
