Joy Orlek OLYMPIC AIRWAYS has appointed Aviation GSA as its local general sales agent with immediate effect. The airline flies three times a week between Johannesburg and Athens – on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday – using an A340-300 providing 45 tons of cargo capacity a week. It’s the first time that Olympic has appointed an independent cargo GSA, and indicates its new cargo thrust, says Aviation GSA’s Max Mariotti. Trade volumes between South Africa and Greece are not major, says Mariotti, but we will be selling the transhipment option beyond Athens. Growing cargo volumes are creating new opportunities for airlines and forwarders specialising in overborder trade. New products, new services and new routes are the order of the day.
