Oil and gas berth planned

The Saldanha multipurpose terminal is fast becoming one of the biggest success stories in the Transnet stable, having grown volumes by 56% last year and predicting further growth this year. In fact, growth predictions for the current year are estimated in the region of 129%. “At present the oil and gas sector is serviced from the multipurpose terminal but with the growth that we are forecasting and achieving we are very soon going to be in the position where we just won’t have the capacity to see one of our berths occupied by a rig for several months,” said terminal manager, Robert van Rooyen. Saldanha has been identified as South Africa’s oil and gas hub, with several tenders out at present for the development of the Industrial Development Zone, which is why the building of a dedicated oil and gas berth at the port is being fast tracked.
