The extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act – which expires in 2015 – was high on the agenda when visiting US president Barack Obama met president Jacob Zuma in Pretoria last week. While it’s up to the US Congress to approve a trade agreement like Agoa, Obama said he was in favour of extending and renewing the agreement which gives preferential tariff access to certain products exported to the US.
