No time off for port staff

AS MANY South Africans plan to commemorate the Day of Reconciliation on December 16, it will be business as usual for the staff at Transnet National Ports Authority marine services. An advisory listing the times service are unavailable over the festive season has been issued to customers by Transnet Cape Town marketing manager, Selma Schwartz. Explaining the two-hours Christmas Day lunch break (from 12:00 to 14:00), Cape Town harbour master Captain Ravi Naicker commented: “Let’s just say the two-hour break is not for them to go off having parties. “The notification went out to clarify there would be no marine service during that period on Christmas Day so an agent should not put in a request for sailing at 13:00 as the tugs will be alongside.” Other hours that services will be unavailable are: December 31: 12:00 until 14:00 and January 1: 00:00 until 0:100 Port control will be available on a 24- hour basis.
