THE SA Express Parcel Association is keeping a close eye on developments around the implementation of Part 108 of the Civil Aviation Act which will demand mandatory identification of all goods placed on aircraft and the screening of goods before they are handed over as cargo, “Our industry will be particularly hard-hit because of the timing involved. A courier doesn’t have time to stage freight," said Saepa chairman Garry Marshall. “Our cut-off times are calculated in minutes and every minute counts. X-ray screening every package before it is placed on the aircraft is probably the most effective screening mechanism. But the X-ray needs to be of a certain standard and if you have 1000 packages to be transported, the implications are significant."
No compromise on new security laws
