Nigeria’s 40-ship deal with Greece at risk

The economic crisis in Greece could kibosh a vessel acquisition deal worth over R3.2 billion with Nigerian ship owners.

Members of the Nigeria Shipowners Association (NISA) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Greek ship owners. This was for 40 ships of various tonnages and class to be brought into Nigeria on a bareboat charter arrangement, with their transfer to Nigerian shipowners after two years.

But there are fears that this deal – originally expected to be accomplished before year-end - might not materialise, at least for now, as Greece slips further into its cash crunch.
