New technology creates ‘smart’ containers

In a move that takes tracking technology to a new level, CMA CGM has entered into a partnership with TRAXENS, a developer of big data for intermodal transport, to provide technology that transforms containers into smart connected objects, monitoring them in real-time  through hi-tech devices.

The CMA CGM BOUGAINVILLE, the group’s new 18 000-TEU flagship vessel, will be first ship in the world to use this technology.

It collects real-time data throughout the container’s journey - whether on land or at sea -  providing information on location, temperature, humidity level, vibrations, impacts, attempted burglary, customs clearance status and more.

The line believes the devices provide even greater added value in the refrigerated transport of perishable goods. They can remotely control and adjust the temperature of refrigerated containers and will allow resource optimisation for routine inspections.

CMA CGM and TRAXENS aim to promote this technology as an international standard in the world of shipping.
