New Suez will grow transhipments

Transhipments are set
to increase thanks to the
opening of the new Suez
and Panama Canals.
The opening of the
new Suez Canal this
month (August) and the
new Panama Canal in
November is likely to create
a shift in global shipping,
according to an industry
source.
“Both these new canals
will offer easier ‘f low’ of
bigger vessels and this will
translate into new services
and more opportunities
for some,” he said. “But
what is certain is that it
will translate into more
transhipments.”
The new 72km Suez Canal
will run alongside the existing
channel and for the first time
two-way vessel operations will
be possible – and not only in
a few places as has been the
case in the past.
It is expected that the
new canal will double daily
ship capacity. The Panama
Canal, when completed,
will in turn more than
double its TEU capacity.
