New-style containers attract cargo from air to sea

A NEW range of reefer containers which offers one of the highest available cooling capacities is driving the trend away from conventional vessels. Ideal for transporting fatty fish, mussels, shrimp and ice cream, the Magnum container is built to maintain a set temperature of -35°C in an ambient environment of up to 50°C, approximately 10°C cooler than most refrigerated containers. “Individually quick frozen products such as vegetables and ice cream have the disadvantage of potential texture damage during shipping. This can happen if they are transported at temperatures higher than those at which they were originally frozen, resulting in possible re-crystallisation and a coarsening of texture,” says Safmarine’s reefer executive Jan Kruger. “In order to avoid this, the Magnum containers are fitted with a Copeland scroll compressor to maintain a stable temperature of -35°C in even the hottest environments, thereby reducing the risk of re-crystallisation.”
