SOUTH AFRICAN Port Operations has taken delivery of the much awaited straddle carriers for Port Elizabeth harbour. They have been delivered in CKD format (Completely Knocked Down), according to spokesperson Sindie Ndwalaza. A project team from Finland is currently in the port assembling the first two straddle carriers. These are expected to be completed by mid-February, whilst the other two are being delivered. The four new straddle carriers will ease the availability of equipment and will result in improved service levels. The total cost of the four straddles is in the region of R21-million according to Ndwalaza.
