Anew inland container depot (ICD) will be opened to serve shippers using the Maputo corridor.
It is being facilitated by DP World Maputo. According to DP World Maputo chief executive officer Tejas Nataraj, the establishment of the DP World Komatipoort ICD follows 12 months of discussions with South African importers and exporters.
“DP World Maputo has worked together with various like-minded suppliers who want to see the success of the corridor.” The ICD is the result of a partnership between DP World and logistics companies and hauliers on the Maputo Corridor. “We have taken on the role of a ‘pro bono’ broker in order to actively assist customers in achieving the best possible supply chain for their cargo”.
He believes it will make Maputo competitive against Durban. Port costs have already been reduced to below those of Durban, and the ICD will help reduce costs further through greater efficiencies in moving containers to centres like Johannesburg, Pretoria and Nelspruit by road or rail.
“There will be substantial landside savings for the regions of Mpumalanga, Limpopo and eastern Gauteng,” he says. The ICD will also handle exports.
