The Port of Cape Town officially has capacity to berth and work three vessels following the successful slipping forward of the last two ship-to-shore cranes. With eight cranes fully operational the port can now comfortably accommodate three container vessels, taking its TEU capacity from 700 000 to 1.4 million. The new equipment is expected to be fully operational by no later than October 8. Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has invested R5.4 billion to erect the eight Liebherr Super Post Panamax cranes with twin lift capability. At least 25 new trailers have also been purchased by the port to move containers from the quayside although these are as yet not operational due to no tractors being available to pull them. FTW understands that equipment is being sourced from the Ports of Richards Bay and Saldanha.
