With vehicle
hijackings
and cargo
thefts now
a daily occurrence, any
new innovative product or
concept that helps to fight
the criminal syndicates is
always welcome.
And, among the latest
of these is the Segura
Smart-Vault Container
manufactured by
Seguratainer.
This is a standard shipping
container
converted
to Category
3 vault
specifications,
specifically
built for the
transportation
of high-value or
high-risk cargo.
It has
patented
concealed
hinges and a
hidden, builtin
intelligent
locking mechanism and
door status alerts. And its
GPS tracking and a motion-
activated camera are only
two of the “state of the art”
security measures of this
product.
All cargo movements
will be controlled from the
control room
of Combined
Private
Investigations
(CPI) – a
corporate
investigation
firm which
tracks high-value
cargo – and will
be supported by
the CPI recovery
and investigation
infrastructure.
Transportation
of the smartvault
container will also be
done by CPI-trained staff.
CPI also offers liability
cover of up to R15 million
and goods in-transit
(GIT) cover of R5m per
conveyance.
“Crime syndicates are well
organised and well-armed.
They show no regard for
the law or human life,” says
CPI’s Johan Robinson.
“They are also more
technology savvy than ever
before and find ways around
control measures such as the
jamming of tracking units,”
he says. “A signal jammer is
not difficult to find and is
cheap to buy. They are also
easy to use.”
He says on top of
that information on the
movement of high-value
loads is often far too easy to
obtain.
“All of these factors
combined with inadequate
law enforcement make
the logistics industry a
minefield for losses.”
Robinson advises
the implementation
of sound control
measures, combined
with security
systems that are
well thought
out and well
controlled.
“Technology
and the evolution
of security
strategies and
procedures are vital
elements in the fight
against crime. The
enforcement of strict
standard operating
procedures is also
an effective tool in
controlling risk,” he
says.
