When a host of people met

at a recent Solas seminar

in Cape Town, a number

of them were expressing

serious concern about just

how ready everybody in the

industry was to meet this

fast-approaching July 1

deadline.

And one of the worries

was about Transnet’s ability

to meet this deadly date.

Said one: “Transnet still

hasn’t got the additional

VGM (verified gross mass)

declaration on its Navis

(port management) system.

So how ready will it be in

three weeks?”

“TPT is going live with

Solas on June 27, so the

Navis system will be

ready to accommodate

the VGM by that date,”

Darren Fraser, a lead

project member of the Solas

project, said.

“We typically have

a 72-hour stack at the

terminal so we receive

exports 72 hours prior to

loading – and with the

(new) requirement we

would need to receive the

information before July 1,”

he said.

“This will be applicable

as the gate rule so any

containers in the stack

pre-June 27 that need to

be loaded onto a vessel will

still be able to be loaded

without the VGM,” he said.

CAPTION

TPT is going live with Solas on June 27, so the Navis system will be ready to accommodate the

VGM by that date.
