Investment by Namport in the ports of Walvis Bay and Lüderitz is opening up opportunities for private sector terminal and logistics operators, according to Elias Mwenyo, Namport manager of business development. The port operator has taken the strategic decision that it will not be investing in bulk handling facilities. It will provide the port-side
connections, with the mining or logistics companies investing in the infrastructure needed to handle the freight. This investment will ensure that the volumes will continue to go through the port because the exporter will have a vested interest in it. The risk, if Namport builds and operates the handling facilities, is that exporters will shift volumes to other harbours, he says.
