At noon today the N3 highway through the Free State remained heavily constrained in both directions because of a truck fire.

Although information is still coming through from the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) company, it has been reported that the fire was accident related.

Northbound lanes to Gauteng were closed and contra-flow traffic was shifted onto the southbound lanes.

N3TC spokesperson Anita Heyl said: "Traffic congestion and heavy delays can be expected in this area.

“Road users are requested to slow down and approach the area with caution.”

The N3TC added that the accident had happened between the Frankfort/Vrede and Roadside/Reitz changes.

It is understood that this morning’s accident is the second consecutive accident on the N3 in which a truck crash has resulted in a fire.

Yesterday’s incident was close to the Heidelberg Traffic Control Centre.

Freight News is working on an update to this story.

* According to the latest update from the N3TC at 13:00, there is no change to the situation on the highway. Northbound congestion remains affected by yesterday's accident near the Heidelberg Traffic Control Centre where only one lane is in use.
