MSC opens Beira depot

A 55 0000-sqm container depot has been opened by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in the port city of Beira. “Situated just a few kilometres from the port, MSC’s container depot offers an efficient logistic base for both full and empty containers. “We are looking at setting up a similar facility in Nacala where we are also set to complete the renovation and refurbishment of our offices within the year,” says Captain Roberto del Vecchio, chairman of MSC Mozambique. He sees the investments as part of the line’s long-term commitment to Mozambique. “It is worth stressing that MSC has been present in Mozambique for over 20 years, so any investments need to be interpreted as structural rather than driven by short-term ambitions. “That being said, Mozambique has rapidly become one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa, averaging 6.4% GDP growth since 2000, and looking to double this figure over the next few years. “This growth has largely been driven by discoveries in the gas, oil and mineral sectors. “These resources have attracted large direct foreign investments, not least in the logistics network that represents a crucial sector to bring these natural resources to fruition. “As MSC we are playing our role in this development.” INSERT We’re looking at setting up a similar facility in Nacala. – Cpt.
