THE MOZAMBICAN government wants the country’s cashew nuts processed at home – and is looking for tighter control of the industry in order to halt smuggling. The National Cashew Institute (INCAJU) has announced that it is tightening the rules for exporting unprocessed cashew nuts from Maputo port in order to verify the real amount and quality of nuts leaving the country by this route. It says that knowing how many nuts are exported raw is not just a matter of statistics: the exporters must pay a surtax on raw nut exports. This measure was introduced as a mild form of protection for Mozambique’s own cashew processing industry, according to INCAJU.
